round #2
this test it to compute the cube root of -27 for which -3 is expected. of
course, this is just one of the 3 cube roots of -27. the others being 3/2
+/- 3i*sqrt(3)/2.
the second test i planned was (-32)^(3/5) which is -8 real and two complex
roots. however no machine found the real root straight from the ^(1/3) or cube
root (if present) functions. the Ti-89 offered the correct but unexpected
symbolic answer of -2*(sqrt(5)-1) + i*2*sqrt(2*sqrt(5)+5) but not its conjugate.
|
the casio fx-991es gives (-32)^(3/5)
as -8, the principal solution. |
